I am a professional ceramist who has extensive experience in creative studio practice, arts education and exhibiting and selling ceramics. This includes taking part in International Ceramics Fairs in Europe as well as exhibiting and selling work in the U.K. through galleries, retail outlets, regional craft centres and ‘Open Studio’ events. I am a member of the ‘London Potters’ group and an associate member of the Craft Potters Association. I make distinctive ceramic thrownware and jewellery from my studio in South East London. Influences on my work include everyday sensory experience, natural forms and historical artefacts. I love exploring different ceramic techniques, shapes, textures, colours and pattern and am constantly evolving new designs through the making process.
In creating my ceramics, I explore form, colour, pattern and texture to design and make work that has a strong visual presence, and which may provoke a sense of joy when viewed and used. I aim to marry the surface decoration of pieces with the forms, which are designed to be tactile and pleasurable to use.
Function, texture, weight, balance, scale and shape are all carefully considered when designing my ceramics and jewellery. The small scale pieces provide me with the opportunity to make quick experiments with ideas for patterns and colour that feed into my larger ceramics.
My ceramics are made in vitrified porcelain or stoneware and are painted with underglaze colours and oxides; they are glazed internally and occasionally fully glazed. Most of my work is wheel thrown and shapes are further refined through turning. The colours are applied to green ware so that they penetrate and permanently bond with the surface of the clay. Most of my work is glazed internally in a second, higher firing with exteriors left unglazed.
My porcelain and silver jewellery is unique and varies in design and form from batch to batch: some items are single painted pieces and others are made from several pieces, e.g. stained porcelain combined with lustre and/or painted pieces/ceramic decals etc. All fittings are sterling silver or gold alloy. I use an electric top loading kiln and biscuit fire to cone 05 and glaze fire to cone 6/7.
