am José Papaseit, a potter from Miravet. The potters in my town are known by the name “cantarer” and I represent the sixth generation of this trade in my family.
I learned to use the potter’s wheel with my grandfather and my father, almost playing, when I was very little and later I studied ceramics at the School of Arts and Crafts in Tarragona.
I have been working professionally in ceramics since 1990, first sharing the family workshop with my parents and for a few years alone. During these years I have combined pottery work with monographic courses to learn and perfect ceramic techniques.
I have the Master Craftsmanship Diploma granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya, as well as the product and artisan establishment badges.

My ceramic production is mainly of a traditional type, very marked by my family origins, where the potter’s trade is lost in time. The basis of my work is the wheel, a technique that I have mastered from a very young age, and that allows me to make countless in different ways.
Beyond my origins, and thanks to the ceramics studies that I studied, to several monographs on ceramic techniques that I have been doing, and my concern and constant observation of the work of many other potters and ceramists, my production has changed over the years, And although I have never stopped making traditional pottery, every time I am expanding the range of working techniques. I really like neriage, with which I make large-format pieces, printing techniques, where I work with natural elements such as vine leaves, oak, fern … For some time I have been working with sigillata soil, and more and more I am trying to get back work with stoneware and porcelain, which I had abandoned in recent years.
I combine my work with the interest of spreading our trade. I do it through guided visits to our workshop, small clay workshops for people interested in having the experience and sensation of moving clay in their hands, lathe courses to teach this very traditional technique, demonstrations of the trade in cultural workshops of various educational centers, fairs or craft markets. In all these activities, I try to make people understand the importance of artisan work, the added value that artisan pieces have, the result of a long learning process and a totally manual process that gives them the value of the unique piece.
