“Jorge Wagner and María José Matos. Born in Morocco. I, María José, in Casablanca and Jorge in Al Hoceima, where we lived until 1974, the year in which we left Morocco and settled in Spain.
Our hobbies are photography, audio, archeology and ethnology.
We liked the pottery of the area, the one we saw in the souks. We knew that it was women potters who made it. We wanted to film the manufacturing process and in the 90s we were able to make our first documentary, “Thamimount la última alfarera”.
In 1992 we began field work and research on this Rif pottery, which would last 12 years, during which we made 42 trips to the area. We visit the 56 pottery tribes. We census the potters and inventory their pottery. In 2009 we published our catalog book “Cerámica rifeña Barro femenino” y en el 2013 “la simbología en la Cerámica Femenina Rifeña”

“AN ANCESTRAL LEGACY MADE BY A WOMAN’S HANDS”
Of all Morocco, only in the Rif, the pottery is exclusively female.
Pottery learned from mother to daughter and anchored in an ancient tradition.
The entire manufacturing phase of the vessels is done by women. From collecting the clay and degreaser to the final preparation of the clay. (Break the clay, sift it, knead it with the degreaser until the optimum elasticity is achieved, the preparation of the slips and tools)
For modeling, the potter will place an upside down deep plate on the ground and place a flat base on top with the clay on top and with the help of her hand she will rotate it like a lathe. You will start to raise the mud by stretching it upwards with the help of a piece of wood. Depending on the size, from a certain height you will use the warping technique until the vessel is completed.
After a brief drying, she will trim all the excess clay to give the piece its final shape and begin the burnishing.
For this use a red or / and white slip depending on the tradition of your tribe. It will decorate the piece according to its use, always keeping the same decorative composition that is the identifying seal of each tribe.
